Rebels Sign First Two Picks From 2014 WHL Bantam Draft

RED DEER, AB – Brent Sutter, General Manager/Head Coach of the Red Deer Rebels Hockey Club, announced today the signing of their first two selections in the 2014 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Both forward Jake Leschyshyn (1st round, 6th overall) and goaltender Dawson Weatherill (2nd round, 37th overall) have signed standard player contracts with the Red Deer Rebels.

Jake Leschyshyn played Bantam AA last year with the Saskatoon Stallions, scoring 31 goals and 28 assist for 59 points in 31 games.  Dawson Weatherill was with the Red Deer Rebels White AAA Bantams last season; he played in 18 games, posting a goals against average of 2.52 and a .929 save percentage.  Both players are born in 1999, and are not eligible to play full-time with the Rebels until the 2015-16 WHL season.

Additionally, Rebels Goaltending Consultant Taylor Dakers will become a full-time member of the coaching staff and relocating to Red Deer.  Dakers was working with Rebels goaltenders on a semi-regular basis while still working with World Pro Goaltending in Calgary.

Brent Sutter on signings – “We are very pleased to sign both Jake and Dawson.  They are both top prospects, and will become significant contributors on our team in the future.  They are excited to play for the Rebels and we look forward to having them wearing our jersey.”

Brent Sutter on Taylor Dakers – “Taylor had done a tremendous job with our goaltenders last season and we felt that we needed to dedicate more time to the development of that position, so bringing him on full-time will assist us in that regard.”
