The Rebels sought their fifth straight win and a split in their season series with the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Just after a heavyweight bout featuring Evan Polei and Kord Pankewicz the Rebels opened the scoring. Presten Kopeck worked a perfect give-and-go with Scott Feser and capped it off with his 9th goal of the season at 6:15 making it 1-0 Red Deer.
The Wheat Kings wasted no time in authoring their reply. Ryan Pulock sprung Richards Bukarts on a breakaway; he went five-hole on Patrik Bartosak for his 19th goal of the campaign. The goal, coming just 28 seconds after Kopeck’s, tied things up 1-1.
The Rebels regained a one-goal lead while on the powerplay. Haydn Fleury charged toward the net and found Scott Feser open just outside the crease. The Red Deer native then jammed home his 6th of the season. Brady Gaudet also picked up an assist on the 2-1 Rebels goal at 17:08.
The Rebels found themselves shorthanded 5-on-3 early in the final frame. They then found themselves tied 2-2 with the Wheat Kings after a Pulock point blast deflected off Kayle Doetzel and into the Rebels net. Pulock’s 16th goal of the season, set up by Tim McGauley and Peter Quenneville, came at the mark.
After being in the sin bin for the tying goal, Brady Gaudet made a solid play to keep the puck in at the Brandon blue line and get it toward the net. Rhyse Dieno did the rest, tipping the puck out of mid-air and past Wheaties goalie Jordan Papirny for his 17th goal of the year. Brooks Maxwell also assisted on the 3-2 Rebels goal at 10:28.
Brandon tied the game once again at the 18:18 mark when Peter Quenneville tipped home a pass from Ryan Pilon. Quenneville’s 16th goal set the stage for overtime.
No scoring. Brandon outshot Red Deer 3-2 in overtime and 42-29 for the game.
Brooks Maxwell, the Rebels seventh shooter, scored the Rebels second goal of the shootout to give them a 4-3 win.
