Third-period collapse results in loss to Broncos

SWIFT CURRENT — The Red Deer Rebels surrendered three unanswered third-period goals Saturday and dropped a 4-2 WHL decision to the Swift Current Broncos.
Sylvan Lake product Tyler Steenbergen potted two of the final-frame markers, notching the eventual winner just 42 seconds in and adding an insurance tally at 18:15.
Rebels captain Grayson Pawlenchuk opened the scoring at 11:26 of the first period in front of 2,354 fans at the Credit Union i-Plex.
Aleksi Heponiemi pulled the Broncos even at 4:33 of the middle stanza, before Jared Dmytriw restored Red Deer’s advantage with a goal late in the period, setting the stage for the hosts’ third-period surge.
Rebels netminder Ethan Anders made 25 saves, three more than Broncos stopper Logan Flodell.
The Rebels will practise this week prior to departing on a five-game trip through British Columbia. The trip opens next Friday versus the Kamloops Blazers.
Red Deer’s next home game is Nov. 18 against the Kootenay Ice.
